German nationals and nationals from Visa Exemption countries and regions (see here) can enter Japan without a visa for short-term stays (up to 90 days). This includes tourism, business (without paid activities), attending a conference, visiting relatives/friends or study.
The Visa Exemption Arrangement applies based on your nationality, NOT on your German residence status.

How to apply
- Only those who reside in the German states Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland can apply for a visa in Frankfurt. (Those who reside in other German states should contact the responsible embassy/consulate: https://www.de.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_de/konsular_index.html)
- We do not accept any applications by post or email. Visa applications must be made in person.
- Please print out all the necessary documents for the application. (We do not offer any printing service.)
- Do not staple or paper-clip your documents.
- Visa applications can be handed in as early as 3 months (or less) before your planned entry into Japan. Exempt from this are working holiday visas, which can be applied for as early as one year (or less) before the planned entry into Japan.
- For a visa application, a prior appointment is mandatory. Appointments can only be booked online.
Notes for booking
You will not receive any email confirmation after booking an appointment, so please either print the screen or take a note of the appointment number upon completing the booking.
In case of a late arrival, regardless of the reason, your application might not be accepted.

Processing time
The minimum processing time is 5 working days (provided all documents are complete and correct). It possibly takes longer.
